First ever pole
October 25, 2009

Sprint Gas Racing has broken through to record it's first ever pole.

Jason Bargwanna recorded the fastest time and put his Sprint Gas Holden on pole for the third V8 Supercar race of the Nikon SuperGP weekend.

In doing so he was the only driver to go below 1minute 50seconds.

Not only was it the team's first ever pole but it was Bargwanna's first pole since Queensland Raceway in 2000.

Bargwanna, his team mate Greg Murphy, and the entire team were ecstatic.

 "It's fantastic!" Jason Bargwanna said.

"The guys in here are the ones that really deserve it; they're the ones that work really hard.

"We've had some adversity this year, we've had things go wrong but they've put it together and we've managed to pull it off.

"For me it's been a long time between drinks for pole position.

"That's one thing about this sport, you know, if you just never give up you end up back there."

Murphy was just as excited for Bargwanna and the team.

"That's what we've been striving for, for I don't know, forever," Murphy said.

"To have the weekend we've been having so far has been just a pleasant change for everybody.

"We have smiles on faces rather than walking around wondering what we're going to do next, so it's a massive change.

"It's been great to be able to race and not defend."

In what was a superb start to the day, it all went downhill soon after. Bargwanna's car lost a cylinder on the fourth lap thanks to a melted plug lead, while Murphy was turned around on the first lap by a wayward Steve Richards. Bargwanna recovered to finish a respectable ninth and Murphy 14th.

In the final race of the day Murphy finished seventh while Bargwanna failed to finish after a suspect overtake by Jamie Whincup sent him into the wall breaking the car's steering.

Bargwanna was clearly shattered given his impressive start to the day.

"Getting pole had me thinking about a surfboard, I really wanted another surfboard (trophy)," Bargwanna said.

"But I've been involved in the sport long enough to know that you can get kicked in the bum after drinking champagne.

"A melted plug lead is beyond minor, it could happen any day, any race, but it had to happen in a race where I started on pole.

"It's shattering. And as for Whincup, that was one bold move. Unless you can set it up early, that's a tough place to overtake.

"He was obviously on some kind of mission, he was out of control."

The team goes to the next round on a high, full of confidence.

"That's what I call awesome," Mike Henry said.

"Really, it's been a brilliant weekend for the team. Pole, several top ten finishes, two very competitive cars and happy drivers.

"It's just what we needed, and what we deserved. We've worked bloody hard for this, so it's great to see the results come our way.

"We're looking forward to the next several events."
