Greg Murphy has narrowly missed out on the top 10 at Sandown, driving his Sprint Gas Holden to 11th in today's 100 kilometre race.
For the first time this season Murphy drove a race from start to finish on soft option tyres, while Jason Bargwanna used hard compound tyres to finish 20th.
Bargwanna's decision not to run the option tyre again gives him an advantage in tomorrow's longer race format - one that he will share with only a handful of drivers.
Murphy was happy with his result.
"We kept out of trouble, we weren't involved in any accidents and we were able to pass a lot of cars today - I'm pretty satisfied with today's performance," Greg Murphy said.
"Today was the first time that I've run an entire race on soft tyres. They did well throughout the majority of the race but they really fell away in the latter stages, which was not totally unexpected, but important to know.
"We weren't able to hold off Reynolds and Coulthard in the last few laps which was a shame as it meant we missed out on the top 10, which was the aim for the day.
"Given where we started, finishing eleventh was a good result."
Bargwanna drove the entire race on control tyres, preferring to save his option tyres for tomorrow's longer race.
"We wanted to give ourselves an advantage in tomorrow's race, so we used hard (compound) tyres exclusively today," Bargwanna said.
"We did toy with the idea of splitting the tyres, but decided against this.
"I tried to get myself into the best position possible and hold on to it.
"We've got excellent hard and soft tyres tomorrow but we'll be looking at the weather to see what it does. It'd be nice not to have rain impact our strategy. We'll see."
Bargwanna is extremely happy with the performance of his car having just missing out on today's qualifying top 10.
"I have a top ten car, I have no doubt about this," Bargwanna said.
"I would have done a ten flat (1m10.0s lap) in qualifying today but I ran short of fuel and had to abort the lap and pit.
"We didn't under-fuel the car it just used more than it should have towards the end of session. We were on track for eighth. I've got the tyres available tomorrow, so we'll see if we can get there."
