MURPHY MAKES TOP 10 OUT WEST

Sprint Gas Racing's Greg Murphy has leapfrogged 14 cars to finish the first leg of the Bigpond 300 in Western Australia in an impressive eighth place.

Murphy drove the entire 42 lap race on the faster soft option Dunlop tyres.

"We had a good run today but we had the advantage of soft option tyres," Murphy said.

"Following this morning's disappointing qualifying we ran the entire race on softs hoping to salvage a good result.

"When it comes to tyre degradation we've struggled a bit this year, but we've made some solid inroads recently and that showed today.

"We wanted to run as long as we could (on softs). Obviously we made it through the entire race on the one set of tyres, which was good.

"I did my best to get as much out of the tyres as possible. We got a good result, which has certainly lifted the team following this week's news."

Jason Bargwanna finished the race in 18^th place but has the advantage of a full set of tyres to choose from for tomorrow's longer race.

"We toyed with the idea of using softs today, but we decided to save them for the Sunday race," Bargwanna said.

"This has worked well for us this year. We've had some good Sunday results where we've been able to race on softs.

"I'm actually really looking forward to tomorrow's race. Murph showed today that we can get a lot out of our soft tyres. They didn't go off as early as we thought they would.

"This gives us several options tomorrow in regard to when we use them.

"In terms of today, we pitted late hoping for a safety car to gain some position. We rolled the dice but lost out. Had there been a safety car we would have been in the top fifteen."

The second leg of the Bigpond 300, a 200 kilometre race, starts at 12.35pm (WA time), 3.35pm (Melbourne time) tomorrow.
